Nutrition Meets Ayurveda: Eating for Your Dosha

An introduction to Ayurvedic nutrition and how aligning your diet with your constitution can transform your energy and wellbeing.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, the “science of life”, is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing from India. Where Western medicine focuses on treating disease, Ayurveda focuses on maintaining balance — preventing illness before it begins.

At its core is the concept of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each person is a unique combination of these energies, and understanding your dominant dosha is the key to personalised health.

Vata (Air + Ether)

Signs of imbalance: anxiety, dry skin, constipation, insomnia, restlessness.

Balancing foods: Warm, cooked, slightly oily foods. Root vegetables, grains, warming spices (cinnamon, ginger, cardamom). Avoid raw, cold and very light foods.

Pitta (Fire + Water)

Signs of imbalance: inflammation, irritability, heartburn, skin rashes, perfectionism.

Balancing foods: Cool, fresh, slightly dry foods. Leafy greens, sweet fruits, dairy in moderation. Avoid spicy, sour, fermented and very salty foods.

Kapha (Earth + Water)

Signs of imbalance: weight gain, congestion, lethargy, attachment, depression.

Balancing foods: Light, warm, dry and stimulating foods. Legumes, most vegetables, pungent and bitter flavours. Avoid heavy, cold, sweet and oily foods.
